Drill vs. Impact Driver: Which Do You Need?
A drill/driver has an adjustable chuck and a clutch. It's the right tool for drilling holes and for driving screws with control. An impact driver takes 1/4" hex bits and adds rotational impacts, which helps when driving long or large fasteners.
As an example of the difference, Milwaukee lists its M18 FUEL 1/4" Hex Impact Driver (2953-22) at 2,000 in-lbs max torque, 0-3,900 RPM and 0-4,400 IPM (source). Its M12 FUEL drill/driver (3403-22) is listed at 400 in-lbs (source). Price: check current price.
Most homeowners should buy a drill first. Add an impact driver if you build decks or fences or drive a lot of lag screws. Specs checked on the manufacturer page on Oct 21, 2026.
