12V vs. 18V/20V: Picking a Battery Platform

"20V MAX" and "18V" describe the same class of battery. The difference comes down to how each brand labels it. 12V tools are smaller and lighter. For example, Milwaukee lists its M12 FUEL drill at 2.5 lbs (source). The 18V/20V tool lines are wider and better suited to heavy jobs. Batteries usually only work within one brand's platform, so choose the platform before you choose the tool. Specs checked on the manufacturer page on Oct 21, 2026.
